What are the nicest neighborhoods in Amsterdam and what can you do there?

Amsterdam is a beautiful, vibrant city, with various districts and neighborhoods that each have their own unique appearance and atmosphere.

We have listed the six nicest neighborhoods and describe what there is to do and why these neighborhoods are so special.

1. The Jordaan

We start with The Jordaan because it is one of the nice neighborhoods of Amsterdam. That’s why this district is also popular with tourists. If you take the time to stroll around, you will find pieces of the real old Jordaan in various places.

Interesting sights include the Westertoren, the Noordermarkt, various courtyards and museums, and Johnny Jordaan Square. A square with statues of famous Jordaan musicians such as Jonny Jordaan, Tante Lee and Manke Nelis.

Explore the Jordaan, and you will also encounter many unique shops and cozy cafés. “Consider visiting a nice café in one of the quieter streets to get the real Jordaan feeling and strike up a conversation with one of the colorful café owners.

The Jordaan has also developed a very different, trendy side: for example, grab a nice cup of coffee from Ree7, have lunch at Pluk, and visit the boutiques and vintage shops of the Negen Straatjes.

2. The Pijp

The Pijp is especially known for the famous Albert Cuyp Market. This market, full of treats like stroopwafels and of course beautiful flowers, is well worth a visit.

But there’s more to see than just this market. As you walk around, you’ll see the well-preserved architecture of the Amsterdam School everywhere. This style can be recognized by its many decorations, rounded brickwork, and wrought iron windows of many housing projects, government buildings, and schools.

3. The Sarphatipark

It’s a nice place to sit down and relax, for example, during a picnic. If you’d prefer to sit somewhere more comfortable, consider one of the nice coffee shops like Coffee & Coconuts on Ceintuurbaan (located in a beautiful old cinema) and then visit one of the many cute boutiques.

Do you want to have a nice beer or wine later in the day? Towards the end of the afternoon, De Pijp transforms into a lively area where you can find many cozy terraces and bars, especially around Marie Heinekenplein and Gerard Douplein.

4. Amsterdam-North

Just the ferry crossing alone makes Amsterdam North worth a visit. And the best part is, it’s completely free! Here, you won’t find canals and neighborhoods full of history, but there is plenty of space for creativity and unique dining options Within a few minutes, you’ll be on the other side, where you’ll find, among other things, the Eye Film Museum.

It’s also fun to take the ferry to the NDSM wharf. After a fifteen-minute boat ride, you arrive in a hip and industrial part of Amsterdam. Here, you’ll find various restaurants, including Loetje aan het IJ, which offers a fantastic view over the water. But Pllek is also highly recommended. This restaurant/café is built from containers and features a delightful city beach on the IJ.

5. Oud-West

Oud-West is one of the nice and cozy neighborhoods in Amsterdam. Along the streets stand stately houses and tall trees, and on every street corner, you’ll find a cozy restaurant.

One advantage of Oud-West is that the Vondelpark is within walking distance. This beautiful park is definitely worth taking a leisurely stroll through. And around this park, there are more special places to explore.

For example, consider the Hollandsche Manege. An inconspicuous entrance gate on Vondelstraat leads to the most beautiful city riding school in Europe and the oldest riding school in the Netherlands. Here, you can, for example, go for a tour, a High Tea, and a demonstration of classical horsemanship.

The Overtoom, which runs parallel to the Vondelpark, is also a lively Amsterdam shopping street that you shouldn’t miss. You’ll find a colorful collection of small shops, concept stores, and boutiques with many typical Dutch products.

And if you love good food? Then the Foodhallen is a place you definitely shouldn’t miss. Here, you have a choice of twenty different restaurants offering a wide range of flavors and cuisines such as Indian street food, tapas, and even unique bitterballen.

Finally, the office building of Nobel Hypotheken is also located in Oud-West. Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for a good and reliable mortgage advisor who goes the extra mile!

6. The Canals.

Lastly, we mention the Amsterdam canal belt because it is renowned worldwide.

The beautiful old canal houses captivate everyone’s imagination. In the streets of the canal belt, you’ll find various buildings used for residential purposes, office spaces, or restaurants. You’ll also find plenty of beautiful shops and several art galleries there.

In the center, you’ll find the history of the city. For example, think of beautiful buildings like Central Station, visit the famous Zeedijk, and dine at one of the many unique restaurants. Visit the Westerkerk on Prinsengracht, of course, the Anne Frank House, and don’t forget the Munttoren at Muntplein.

Lastly, a canal cruise through the Amsterdam canals is a must. You see the city from a completely different perspective and can enjoy all the beauty that Amsterdam has to offer while enjoying a snack and a drink.

After reading this information, are you considering living (temporarily) in Amsterdam yourself? Nobel Hypotheken can certainly help with that!

Because in Amsterdam, many expats enjoy the combination of working in this vibrant city and everything else Amsterdam has to offer.
