September and October may make you think of autumn, but the final weeks of summer often still bring us some fantastic weather. The perfect opportunity to enjoy a drink, a bite to eat or a leisurely meal outside on a terrace.

But where exactly are the best and most enjoyable places to have a drink, grab something to eat and, of course, do a little people-watching? Below, we have selected some great spots where you can make the most of those final warm days of summer. And if you like going out with your family, children or dog, there are plenty of great options for you too.

Terraces with a beautiful view

Floor17 in Amsterdam West is located on the 17th floor of the Leonardo Hotel next to Rembrandtpark. As well as a great food and drinks menu, it offers sweeping views across the city.
REM Eiland, near the Houthavens, is located on a former offshore broadcasting platform above the water. Here, you can enjoy drinks and bites high above the city or have a meal in the restaurant, which also offers fantastic views.

Terraces in the sun

Karavaan in Amsterdam West has a large and lively terrace on Kwakersplein that gets plenty of sunshine throughout the day. It is a great place for drinks, lunch or dinner.
Dignita Hoftuin can be found in the city centre and has a peaceful courtyard garden hidden away from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam. It is the perfect place to enjoy brunch, with plenty of vegetarian and seasonal options.

Terraces by the water

Hannekes Boom in the city centre is a lively and welcoming spot right by the water. Take a seat on the waterfront and enjoy watching all the activity on and around the water.
Waterkant, also located in the city centre, has a large waterside terrace with a relaxed Surinamese atmosphere, great food and a selection of special beers.
Pllek in Amsterdam Noord is located at the NDSM Wharf, where you can sit with your feet in the sand while enjoying beautiful views across the IJ.
DOK48 is located at the marina in IJburg. Enjoy a pancake or a refreshing drink on the sunny terrace while watching the beautiful boats in the harbour. After your meal, it is also well worth taking a stroll around the marina.

Terraces with playgrounds for children

Terrasmus in Amsterdam West is a welcoming park pavilion in the middle of Erasmuspark. From your table on the terrace, you have a direct view of a large enclosed playground with a sandpit. Terrasmus mainly uses local and sustainable products, with an emphasis on accessible, high-quality food and drinks. You can sit back and enjoy something to eat or drink while your children have fun in the playground.
Groot Melkhuis in Amsterdam Zuid is something of a classic, tucked away in the heart of Vondelpark. Its terrace is directly next to a large playground with swings, slides and a sandpit. It is not just about good food and drinks here; there is plenty of fun for the little ones too. Parents can relax over a coffee, lunch or drinks while the children play safely nearby.
De Vondeltuin in Amsterdam Zuid is located at the far end of Vondelpark. There is a lovely natural playground right next to the tables as well as a special children’s menu. Just like in your own garden, you can simply relax and do whatever you feel like doing.

Terraces with children near an urban beach

De VerbroederIJ in Amsterdam Noord has a huge but easy-to-navigate site by the water. Children can enjoy the swings, sandy beach and vegetable garden, and there are even piglets wandering around.
Strandcafé Buiten in Nieuw-West is located directly on the Sloterplas, with a terrace overlooking the urban beach. It is ideal for children who want to play in the sand while you relax with a drink.

Dog-friendly terraces next to a park

De Parkwachter in Amsterdam West is located in the middle of the off-leash area of Westerpark. While you enjoy a coffee on the relaxed terrace, your dog can play outside with other dogs. Water bowls are always available.
Proeflokaal ‘t Blauwe Theehuis in Amsterdam Zuid is situated in the heart of Vondelpark. This huge circular terrace, operated by Brouwerij ‘t IJ, is the perfect place to enjoy a beer after a long walk through the park. Dogs are very welcome both inside and outside.

Pet-friendly terraces by the water

Hannekes Boom in the city centre also has a creative and colourful waterfront terrace that is very dog- and pet-friendly. There is plenty of space outside along the wooden quays, and watching the boats go by never gets boring. Dogs are welcome on a leash both inside the café-restaurant and outside on the sunny waterfront terrace.
Pllek in Amsterdam Noord, as mentioned earlier, is located at the NDSM Wharf and has a large sandy beach. Well-behaved dogs are very welcome on a leash in the outdoor beach area, making it a great place to combine a drink or meal with a refreshing walk through Amsterdam Noord.
Vessel Brasserie in the Houthavens is located by the water near Pontsteiger. Dogs are warmly welcomed on the large, peaceful terrace and will even be offered a bowl of water.

Finally, the terrace at Celia Amsterdam in the city centre is a lovely and surprisingly dog-friendly spot. Four-legged visitors are extremely welcome both on the terrace, which is often pleasantly peaceful, and inside. They even regularly organise special dog brunches featuring ‘pupcakes’ and puppuccinos.
